Character's past: Konohamaru’s life has been fairly normal. His family life is stable, with his parents still together and maintaining a steady upper-middle class lifestyle. He never experienced anything vastly traumatic that could damage him physically, mentally, or emotionally. His social life was all right; he had his group of buddies but a few schoolyard enemies. Life treated him well enough.

Except it forced him to live under a famous man's shadow.

Having Sarutobi, former Konoha mayor, former Oshima High School principal, generally a well-respected man, as your grandfather fosters both lofty dreams and insecurity, no matter how well hidden, and Konohamaru hides it pretty well. One day he wants to be a household name, make it big in…something. Named by the man after the village he once served, the youth convinced himself he was destined for greatness that would surpass the old man’s and, while Konohamaru loved him dearly, developed some animosity towards his grandfather. He would become the most respected man under the Sarutobi name; he would run Konoha more smoothly and successfully than any other past, present, or future mayor; and by Kami he would make Oshima the most prestigious school in all of Japan. Always feeling like people saw in him his grandfather instead of Konohamaru, he demanded people call him by his given name, trying his very hardest to establish he was his own person and not an extension of the great Sarutobi.

Unfortunately, from the look of things, the big dreamer had a long way to go. Like kids often do, Konohamaru aimed high without exactly knowing what it took to reach the skies. He wanted the fame and power but didn't take into account the work he’d need to do to attain it, like oh say…actually study for his classes, for starters. Rather, as ambitious as he might be, Konohamaru was a ~~lot~~ bit of a brat, doing certain things only when he felt like it (like his schoolwork) and indulging in his other interests (like sports and some arts). Coming from a fairly famous and well-off family, he was also used to getting what he wanted and grew up rather spoiled. He had the big ego to boot and thought he was all that with a bag of chips plus a ragtag middle school posse (the Konohamaru Corps) he hoped would follow him to high school out to prank your pants silly.

While his grades were, ahem, not the best, Konohamaru was accepted into Oshima ~~because of obvious family connections~~ for his athletic aptitude, mainly in track. Track was his personal metaphor for running far away from Sarutobi’s shadow and establishing a talent that was all his own. Running gave him a sense of freedom that perhaps certain family ties denied him, and he figured if he failed at his dream to be Konoha mayor or Oshima principal (not that he would, but theoretically, you know!) he could make his mark in track and field. Coming into the high school his grandfather once oversaw and he knows one day he’ll run himself, Konohamaru felt like a big man with the world at his fingertips. The boy was the epitome of the freshman newb -- short (he insisted he'd get his growth spurt soon enough), loud, annoying, and thought he was super hot stuff (none of that mild sauce, please). With that kind of attitude he’d probably make friends with the toilet bowl, the locker, and the trash can. It would be interesting to see how high school reality could change his perceptions.

Despite a mischievous, ~~pervy~~ bratty streak, deep down Konohamaru's a good, outgoing kid who just needs some sense slapped into him sometimes. Even though he strives to best him, Konohamaru looks up to Sarutobi, and he regards his role models with great respect, though he's not above messing with them a little. He may be the type to garner a group of acquaintances, but maybe one or two he'll cherish as his true friends. And besides...ego isn't always so bad. Konohamaru just needs to know when it's appropriate.
